SOLVED: NBRT [ERR-0001] "Required File Not Found"
Hello everyone,
I have been struggling with a NBRT (Norton Bootable Recovery Tool) Error when trying to boot from a USB flashdrive which I created using the latest NBRT download (version 5.1.0.26).
I was able to see that the USB was successfully created, and subsequently even updated definitions sucessfully, but when I tried to test the USB flashdrive by booting to it, I would get the error message.
I knew that the computer (a Dell Inspiron Windows 7 64-bit laptop purchased just last April 2012) was in fact booting from the newly created NBRT USB flashdrive, because the bootup messages are different from when the computer boots from its HD.
Booting from the USB flashdrive, I would see "WINDOWS IS LOADING FILES" message first (different from when it boots from the internal C: drive).
After the "WINDOWS IS LOADING FILES", message (when booting from the USB flashdrive), I would see the familiar
"STARTING WINDOWS" splash screen with the windows logo.
Next I woud see the NBRT yellow background, and after a while, I would get the error message as follows:
"Norton Bootable Recovery Tool failed to launch. Required file not found. Program will exit. [ERR-0001]."
The solution: The NBRT created USB flashdrive gives this error when booting from one of the newer USB 3.0 ports.
I tried booting using a 2nd USB port that was also USB 3.0 and got the same error.
But when I booted from my computer's older USB 2.0 port: I DID NOT GET THE ERROR, and was able to get to the NBRT program screen that shows my installed NIS key code.
So if you get this same error message, check your computer's manual to see which of your USB ports are 3.0 and which are the older 2.0. My computer has 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, and one eSATA/USB combo connector with USB PowerShare. This last port must be USB 2.0, because it worked to plug the USB flashdrive into it as well.
Hope this helps save others from not being able to use their NBRT created USB flashdrive when they might actually need it!
May I suggest that Symantec post this info in a sticky and also put a note on the NBRT download website noting that any USB flashdrives created with NBRT will only work in the older USB 2.0 slots and not the newer USB 3.0 slots.
