Utilities v16 problems with WIN XP

$

0

As background, I have been an enthusiastic, long time (decades) user of various Norton products.  I frequently recommend them to others.  My computers use Windows XP SP3 and I normally use AOL (Explorer) as my Browser.  All my software is up-to-date. When I was recently offered an opportunity to upgrade to Norton Utilities v16 from v14, I took it.   Unlike my prior Norton-experiences, Utilities v16 has caused problems that I cannot remedy:

1)  Windows Start Menu Shortcuts to frequently used Programs have all vanished and do not come back after several days of new use.

2)  Internet Log in Information for frequently used Internet websites simply cannot be maintained.  Yes, I have manually de-selected deletion of "Cookies" and "AutoComplete Form Data" PLUS I have selected specific cookies to retain.  No luck so far.

3)  Canon camera software for downloading photos from camera totally not working even after reloading from original Canon disc.

I have enough experience to “work-around” these problems but workarounds cost time and they are irritating.  Norton Support has not been able to resolve my problems – so far.  I just checked Amazon and noticed that Norton Utilities v16 is only being offered for operating systems Vista and Windows 7.  Win XP is not mentioned.  Perhaps, Utilities 16 is not for Win XP despite Norton's indication that it can be used (with some qualifiers)?  Or, maybe, v16 was released before beta testing was complete and the above “bugs” were fixed?

Bottom line, I can see some enhancements Utilities, if these problems can be resolved.  Otherwise, it's no good for me and I would want my money refunded.  Can anyone tell me how to fix any one or all the above three problems?  Thank you.

Used Norton Power Eraser, Now getting Startup Repair Loop- Dell Inspiron N5010 Windows 7 64 bit

Hello,

Contracted a virus after opening an email attachment. I read some forums and decided to use Norton Power Eraser to fix the problem. Everything seemed to be fine until I tried to boot into Windows.

I followed a post and downloaded the Farbar Recovery tool and ran the scan. I have posted the results of the FRST.txt scan as well.

I'm hoping that someone can help because I'm really in a jam.

Thanks in advance,

Fairly New Ghost 15 (SP1) User Question

$

Greetings all,

I started using Ghost in August, and thus far have had no problems with it (that I know of, anyway).

My previous practice of "backing up" was to do true, direct file copies of my data files to a HP Media Center Personal Drive, then transfer as necessary when I replaced machines.  Two years ago I started using the Windows 7 Backup feature but after reading it isn't all that good or reliable, I purchased Ghost 15 (download version) based on two decades of using (and having faith in) Norton products.

Being one that has never had a major computer crash (can't say the same for family members and friends), I am preparing for a disaster I hope never comes.

I back up my desktop (Digital Storm desktop running Windows 7 64-bit) to an external Seagate 2TB USB GoFlex hard drive.  My scheduled "Computer" back-up is Sundays at 7 p.m. (the C and system reserved partitions), with a new set point each month (and incrementals in between).  I ALSO run a scheduled "My Documents" backup to the same destination drive at 8 p.m. each Sunday.   My question is since the Computer back-up feature makes a back-up of everything (system files, data files) am I going overkill with both a Computer and My Documents back-up each week?

AllenM's index post, by the way, is quite helpful for new users trying to understand what's at work in Ghost, as are quite a few other posts here.  I'm pretty fussy about system maintenance (the reason I've probably never had a real crash), and feel I'm quite prepared in case of catastrophe.  Am I following best back-up practice?

Welcome your thoughts,

Kelly

New Disk Restore

I back my present disk and programs to ext Hard Drive, how do I copy or restore to a new blank disk.

copying HDD to SSD get cannot copy error

Okay. I'm trying to copy my old HDD to my new SSD

I initialized the SSD.

Info for the SSD is:

Disk 1

basic

online

partition style: master boot record

capacity 122103 MB

unallocated space 0MB

reserved space 0MB

The HDD disk I am copying from
 is:

disk 0

basic

online

partitions style MBR

capacity 114463

unallocated space 0MB

reserved space 0MB

Okay I ran the copy sequence for seven hours then got the error message

cannot copy.. lack of memory ( or something to that effect)

The copy options I checked were:
check source file system for errors
check destination for errors.
resize drive to fill unallocated space.
set drive for booting.
copy MBR.
partition type: primary
drive letter z

While preparing to copy Ghost indicated that the source drive had a primary partition with NTSF and an secondary partition of 10MB unallocated space.

I told it to copy the primary partition to the new disk which showed as having one partition.

So my question is.

Should I uncheck any of the options I selected and try again?

Or should I try copying by using disk recovery by backing up the old disk to my external storage and then 'restoring' it to my new SSD???

Copying hdd to ssd - nothing happens (nothon ghost 15)

Hi,
I recently bought a Samsung ssd and tried to migrate the data from the hdd of the laptop to it but I somehow failed doing so as I can't boot windows if I replace it with the hdd. I've followed the guide for data migration using Norton Ghost 15 but when I try to copy the hdd the system partition isn't there under the hidden files. Only the C drive (os) and the D drive (empty) are showed. I have been told thought that this should be a problem, so once the C partition was copied over to the ssd I replaced the hdd with it and all I got on booting was a black screen stating that I should put in a CD and press a key to boot from it.
Is it something that I'm doing wrong?

I'm not really experienced with these stuff and this is the first time I've ever tried installing a ssd.

any help at all will be very much appriciated
regards,
Dorre

I recently installed NU 16. Still getting used to it. After the daily scheduled optimiztion, I get a message in red stating, "Attention! Manual defrag required. I have searched the Help files for a description of manual defrag, nothing. I have accomplished many defrags on the partitions, and they indicate Optimized. I keep getting the message. Anyone know what this means? Anyone know how to accomplish a manual defrag so i can make the message go away?

Norton Ghost 15: Help restore complete disk image, Recovery Console doesn't see main internal drive

$

I've been using North Ghost 15 for six months or so. Backing up an internal 1gig hard drive to an external 1gig drive.

The PC had hard drive failure and after repair, the machine works fine. It's an ACER, Desktop, running Windows 7 Pro. It runs fine and boots into the new installation of Windows 7 on the new HD.

I installed Norton Ghost and can see my backups from a few weeks ago, and can move FILES from the external to the internal drive.

However having a problem when using the boot CD to attempt a complete system restore from backup.

The recovery program sees the external HD, but does not see the internal drive, main drive for the PC, configured as drive C as usual.

Any ideas why? And how to resolve?

Hi there,

I would like to know if I can use the following old licenses for the currently available product version. I would like to give these licenses away and do not want to deal with issues that the keys are not valid anymore.

Norton AV 2011 1 User 3PC

Norton Ghost 15

Norton AV 2010 1 User

Norton Utilities 14.5

Norton Internet Security 2011 1U 3PC

Norton Internet Security 2012 1U 3PC

Thank you so much for your help

Norton Ghost 15: Help restore complete disk image, Recovery Console doesn't see main internal drive

Norton Speed Disk

When I run speed disk it will disk  defrag just fine but it NEVER collects boot time stats AND it will not optimize the page file.

I've had this problem for a while now. I've posted here before and other users have had the same problem.

Also Reg defrag doesn't work.

Now its not a big deal and I really don't know what exactly it does but I want it to work and maybe get an answer. This just lets me know when I purchase a new comp with windows 8 I just may need to switch to a diff virus and utilities program by a different company. And I'm the kinda customer Norton likes, I'm the one that pays Norton for a virus scanner, when I can pay half the price for the same thing OR a free version that seems to do just fine on everyone else laptop. But no, I spend my hard earned money on Norton 360 and utilities.

And then when I have a problem I can't get answers, Just a discussion board. Now I appreciate the help from the community, but if no one else has found the answer since  03-24-2012 (http://community.norton.com/t5/Other-Norton-Products/Norton-Utilities-15-SpeedDisk/m-p/689643#M46060) that's just not helpful. Is there an email address for support?

Thanks

Norton Ghots 15 - Doesn't detect any drive

As I see, standard problem with NG15 - doesn't detect any drive and shows E1ADDA52 error.

I attach partinfo.txt, but let me explain my configuration as it can be unusual. I have one physical drive with two partitions. Everything is encrypted with TrueCrypt using "system encryption" for the first partition, and "partition encryption" for the second one. The system is Windows 7 64-bit.

I would really like to use Norton Ghost without having to encrypt my whole drive, so I think you will help me in any way.

NU15 Fail!

So NU15 has been touched by the Symantec genies too.  It used to work on this computer, but I've had it off because I felt it slowed my computer down.  I stupidly decided to try it again.  Installation went fine until I clicked "Check your disk".  That produced a white screen that did not load and could not be closed without restarting computer.  On restart same thing.

Tried contacting www.norton.com/chat and entered all required details.  Chat agent informed me I had contact support for NIS/NAV.  I had quite clearly entered that I needed support for NU15, but anyway, he said he would transfer me.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... After a long wait...  "Sorry, can I confirm your phone number?" Gave number - " Someone will contact you within 24hrs.  From past experience with Customer Support returning calls, I'm not holding my breath.

Uninstall/ reinsatall and yep, Same thing.

That with the issues of no local vault in the 2013 versions and no Firefox support for the 2012 versions tears it for me.

I expect a much better experience for the price Symantec ask than this.

Abandon ship,

The Symantec ship is sinking!

Yes, I do have a Case Number if any Symantec Employee's want it.

:smileymad:

Edit: This was all after two rounds of Smart Update, the second of which offered a discounted NU16.  I wouldn't have that if you paid me!

Need an update for Ghost Version 14

$

Hi

I have Norton Ghost installed on my old Windows XP (SP3)  PC together with NIS 2011 subsequently upgraded to NIS 2012 on renewal.

I have just purchased a new NIS 2013 (3 User) which installed on the PC and my two Laptops.  I decided to uninstall all older versions and files etc using the Norton Removal Tool so that I could do a clean install.

This worked fine on the Laptops but unfortunately it caused me as problem on the PC as it also installed Ghost.  I do not have a CD for Ghost as it was a downloaded purchase (from Symantec) and had to install it from my saved download file, which was fine.  However, it now lacks the Live Update facility (under Help) and if I try and install Live Update from the downloaded file I am told it cannot install it as my Live Update is already the latest version - presumably the one installed within NIS 2013.

I know that there were two updates to Ghost Version 14, which as I recall were SP1 and SP2,but I cannot see any way to obtain these updates without my Live Update facility within the Ghost application.

Is there any source that would enable me to download these two updates and install them manually?

Recovering a computer

Hi all.  First time poster.

I have a simple, general question with regards to Norton Ghost 15.0.  I have used Ghost for a few years but I think that I'm confusing myself reading some posts.

When I define a backup using recovery set points, if I have to restore my system from a crash (for example), do I choose the latest incremental recovery point or do I have to choose the initial base image?

In other words, does choosing just an incremental recovery point automatically resore the entire drive to the point of that exact incremental?

I want to make sure because I've read that a new recovery point (base) should be performed also (weekly / quarterly / monthly) and I wonder why if incremental points are just as effective.

I just want a clear picture to better understand how to effectively use this product.

Thanks for replies
