Norton online backup - accidental removal of computer

hI,

well firstly I've had problems with my laptop and had to restore it to factory settings, which is why I used norton backup,

however on restarting my system norton backup recognised my device as a completely different device and wouldn't allow me to restore old files onto it, I therefor tried to remove the newly recognised computer but accidentally removed my old computer and the backed up files, is there any way to get this back?

have been disappointed with this product thus far, any help would be very appreciated

Ghost 12 on XP - Need Actual File Names and NOT fbf files of Folders

Have Ghost 12 on Win XP.

I did an image of my C drive...good...Great.

Now I want to back up several folders on my external E: drive for safety.  I did that backup with Norton Ghost Files and Folders...and I ended up with these STUPID FBF files!!!  I need to see clear file names LIKE I DO WITH MY C Image backup.

I can search the fbf files with the ghost interface ...but this is BAD for me.  I need to see CLEAR and REAL  file names and browse through the .jpg pictures there too.

I suppose I could image the E: drive to get the Clear structure and names... but it is 500gigs and my destination only has 150 Gigs left on it.  I just want 25 gigs out of of 3 file folders backed up cleanly.

Common Ghost...why cant you just back up files... without having to go CRYPTIC propreitary on the names...what are we... back in the 1980's

Any help?

Thanks

Windows 8 & Ghost 8 Cold Images

Hello,

I though Ghost 8 wasn't supposed to work with Windows 8 so I decided to give it a try. I'm only concerned with a cold image created while in another bootable partition. I created a Ghost 8 Windows 8 image with Ghost32.exe while in another Windows 8 partition. After the image was created, I deleted the Windows 8 partition, re-created it, reformatted it then ran Ghost  8 again and reloaded the image I just made. Booted the newly loaded Windows 8 partition and it's working great.

Is there something that's not supposed to work using Ghost 8 for a cold image with Windows 7 or Windows 8?

Thanks

Trouble restoring a cloned drive on Win 7 with SRP.

Hi there,

a big hello to the community since this is going to be my very first post in the forums.

So here's the situation : i  recently purchased an SSD drive for my desktop and obviously wanted to clone the system drive to it via my Norton Ghost 15 purchase that came bundled with it.

My configuration is as follows :

OS is Windows 7 64 bits

1 physical HDD, comprised of two partitions :

C, which holds my OS, and the SRP. (size is 100 Gbs, 30 Gb fre)

D, which holds my static data such as pictures, audio/video, games etc (size is 800 Gbs, 170 Gbs free)

Now, i plugged in the SSD, formatted it, made it up and running, a few copy tests and everything seemed to be fine, FW was up to date.

My goal, as most of you have probably guessed, is to clone the C drive into the SSD and boot on it, and do whatever i want with the legacy partitions that will result from the original drive (holding both C & D) being a de-facto slave drive. Ideally, i would like to later use some available space in the SSD to make an additionnal partition but that's another story.

Unfortunatly, i tried my luck without going through enough research, during my initial attempt to do things fast... the result is, in order to clone the C drive, i made a One Time Backup comprising both the C partiiton and the SRP that Norton detected as associated to it like it should, and then tried to restore them one after the other to the SSD drive, which by the way already had an assigned letter (which was F before i did anything).

So i went in the restore options, and went to "custom settings" and forced BOTH backups to be restored to my F drive... the 1st thing i noticed was that Windows automatically disabled/disconnected my F drive because of a "signature collision" right after the first restore (of the SRP). And again, without thinking, i forced it back online... i think even more people see me coming... after i rebooted the second time on that F Drive and restored the C parition on it, i had my immediate punishment : the "windows copy not genuine" error on my ORIGINAL disk... so i physically removed the SSD but unplugging it completely, and tried to boot as if nothing had happened from my usual HDD.

But again, i persistently got the "not genuine" error... deducing that i had probably managed to mess up HDD's MBR with all my faulty and uncontrolled operations, i ran windows repair ONCE and it bred a new "windows 7 (recovered)" to my OS listing on top of the initial Windows 7, which appeared to rely on my SSD for the MBR, but STILL used my HDD for everything else (i could clearly hear all the mecanical tics of it going on during the usual lenghty bootup sequence and when i used my system just like before, not exactly what you'd expect from an SSD, the hard drive activity window confirmed my point). Once bootup was complete and i could finally access my system again, i noticed my SSD was the locked drive on which windows was running (the windows symbol was on it, and i could not format it), a bit surprising since everything i did still physically relied on the HDD... and its letter had changed from F to E without my intervening.

After (finally) some Google, i managed to get my initial boot working from the HDD without relying on the recovered one again, by modifying the registry in safe mode in HKEY CURRENT LOCAL MACHINE\xxx\MountedDevices (and hence swapped the faulty E to C), rebooted and all went back fine, EXCEPT that now, the SSD is again the F drive, and can be accessed for formatting just like before.

Wierd issue :  my SRP on C now appeared for all to see, not hidden anymore, assigned on E drive. I unassigned the letter for security purposes and formatted the SSD, rebooted and my machine worked like a charm again... so now, can anyone tell me if there is anything i should do BEFORE attempting anything again ? can my system and its associated MBRs and files be considered reliable again ? or are there any dark issues that may arise in the future i should check before going any further ?

Sorry for the long post, but i couldn't think of any other way of telling my sad story here...

Many thanks in advance for your time and consideration...

Norton DNS block page vs safeweb.norton.com search

Greetings Everyone,

The Norton DNS block reason page says EVERFREE.NET is blocked as "pornography" but a Safe Web search shows the site as "OK". EVERFREE.NET is not assoicated with pornography so why is it getting blocked as such when Safe Web says it's ok?

Swapping drives should i use one time backup or copy hard diskkup or

Hi all,

New to the forum and new to using Ghost.   I have a computer with a failing hard drive - win 7 64 bit.  i plan to swap out the drives.

I just purchased ghost 15.   I plan to install it from a download from this site: http://www.norton.com/ng15

then use my product key - i am doing this to hopefully ensure i get a new version of ghost.   I can then do live update.  But my question is:

do i do a complete backup via one time backup - do this to DVDs  or could i just add the new drive format it on the computer and then do the copy hard disk?   then pull the bad disk and set the new disk as the master.    Is that the best way or should i do a backup to DVD's then put the new disk ion the pc and do a restore from the ghost image on the DVDs - or am i wrong in both counts?  If there is a better way, please let me know.

Thanks

Symantec Mail Security for Exchange -- SCL Scoring

Underneath "Premium AntiSpam Actions" in SMSE, there is an option that states "Assign SCL value to message."  I checked the documentation regarding this setting and it states the following:

Assigns the SCL value that you specify to the message.

You can choose a value from 1 to 9. The default value is 8.

This option is available only for Exchange 2003. The value that you specify replaces the existing SCL values of incoming messages.

Given how often documentation is not updated, I just wanted to confirm what I was reading.  Is this setting truly only valid for Exchange 2003 and no other versions of Exchange?

Thanks!

Norton Power Eraser does not run

Help please?

My NIS scan gets stuck every time on "Checking for:SecurityRisk.URLRedir".

So I stopped the scan and clicked the link for more help.

I followed the advice to download Norton Power Eraser, and to run it.

Windows asked "Do you want to allow ...etc" and I clicked yes, but nothing seemed to happen.

Task Manager showed no new applications so I tried again - 4 times.

Then I noticed that Task Manager showed 5 copies of a NPE process running.

Should I leave them to sort things out or end them and start all over again?

Norton Utilites 2013 Install Hangs on Windows 8

My Windows 8 x64 Pro system locks up immediately when I try to install "Norton Utilities 2013 16.0.0.126.exe" , no pop-up window or anything and have to reboot with the kill switch. What might be the solution?

SOS-Ghost doesn't detect my hard drive

My laptop is an Asus U56E, Win7 64-bit, with C: (OS) and D; (Data) partitions.  It also has other partitions for a Linux OS,  I want to make an image of my C: partition on and external drive, a WD My Passport.  I have installed the latest Norton Ghost and updated it.

1. Ghost does not detect any drives or partitions on my laptop.

2. My drive and partitions, with drive letters, are detected in Disk Management

3. My drive and partitions, with drive letters, are detected in Ghost Recoverty CD environment.

My partinfo file is attached.  Please advise what my problem is.  Thanks

Cloning IDE hard drive to SSD with XP pro and Norton Ghost

Hi, ha vign previously used norton ghost in past and found it to be amazing software... and having LOST my cd and key.. i thought id buy a new licence and use this programme again.

I have an old pc that i love...does all i need and more even though my lappy is much higher spec! Its 3 gig single core with a gig ram...but its VERY slow to start up.... and its getting a bit conjested... so ive decided to put all of the stuff from mydocuments my videos and my pictures and my music onto a seperate SATA hard drive... and clone the remainder of the C drive onto a lovely fast 60gb SSD. Its got loads of little programmes on it...stuff that ive paid forlicences etc but dont use all the time... reinstalling everything would be a nightmare, possibly a few days work.

Anyway... all my data is transferred... my 120 gigs on a 160 gb ide drive is now down to less than 30 gigs... ive updated my norton ghost with the latest version and updated my windows xp deleted some rubbish done a scan for adaware and ready for cloning...

2 attempts later... no success. Ive done what people say... NOT to format the SSD drive with a full format but just a quick one. What i end up with is a ssd that starts to boot up and doesnt. I think the first time it did boot up but didnt work properly.. so i treid again after updating ghost. This time i just get the blue screen... as if its going to start.. but nothing happens.

Im back to the ide drive again.. where next! Im reading about AHCI settings is there something i need to do here? Is it in the bios? I really have no idea what it is or what the 'allignment' thing people are talking about is... i thought norton ghost would sort it all!

Norton Safety Minder giving me error message...
